Reporting to Parents/Caregivers
& Wh
ānau

"The principal and teaching staff report clearly to parents/whānau about how well their children are progressing and achieving in relation to the National Standards. They have ongoing conversations with parents/whānau about their children’s learning. Teachers offer constructive suggestions about how parents/whānau can support learning at home."
- Education Review Office, 2015
ASSESSMENT: how we discover what students know and have learned
The purpose of assessment at Paparimu School is to improve student learning, to provide information on student learning and to contribute to the efficacy of learning programmes. It enables the progress and achievement of students to be evaluated,
  • giving priority to student achievement in literacy and numeracy
  • the breadth and depth of learning, related to the needs, abilities and interests of students, the nature of the Paparimu School curriculum and the scope of the New Zealand Curriculum.

At Paparimu School we believe assessment is integral to all teaching and learning. Our approach to assessment recognises the importance of assessing the process of learning as well as the products of learning.

The main aim of assessment at our school is to provide feedback on the learning process and the development of the various elements of learning such as the development of knowledge, skills, concepts, key competencies and values to inform further learning - based on comprehensive information. Students and teachers are actively engaged in assessing the students’ progress as part of the development of their wider critical thinking and self-assessment skills.

REPORTING: how we communicate information about assessment
Reporting on assessment at Paparimu School includes communicating what students know, understand and can do.

Reporting involves parents/caregivers, students and teachers as partners and is honest, comprehensive and understandable to all parties and in line with the Ministry of Education’s guidelines for valid and reliable data.

Reporting to parents/caregivers and whānau occurs through:

Written Reports

Mid & End of Year

Written reports provide a snapshot of the child’s learning in relation to various areas of learning, including the progress and achievement in relation to the National Standard in reading, writing and mathematics. These reports are provided to parents twice per year.

The mid year (interim) report shows how students are progressing for their year level.

The end year reports (for students in Year 4 and above) show how the student has achieved in relation to their year level.

Because five year old children start school at different times during the year, their reporting varies slightly based on their time at school. In line with Ministry of Education’s guidelines, a written report is completed for each student based on the following number of weeks that they have been at school.

Learning Expos

Terms 1 & 3

Picture
Learning Expos are 30 minute, group based sessions held in the classrooms, twice a year. Their purpose is to share the child's current learning goals with whanau.

Each child leads their parents/caregivers around a series of 'stations' at the Expo. Students share different aspects of their learning in several curriculum areas. Parents/caregivers also spend time speaking with their child’s teacher about their child's current learning.

Learning Expos are  a fantastic way for parents/caregivers to be part of the learning at school and to discuss their child's individual learning goals.

Learning Conferences

Terms 2 & 4

Student Learning Conferences are formal reporting sessions with both parents/caregivers and students. They are run on an individual basis. Each conference is 20 minutes in duration and is led by the teacher and the student.

Learning Conferences are a time to celebrate student learning, progress and achievement. Student goals and samples of work are shared and achievements and areas for future focus are discussed.

Student Learning Conferences are a wonderful opportunity for parents and caregivers to share and spend time with their child and enjoy who they are as learners.

Student Learning Conferences happen twice a year in Terms 2 and 4.
